Audio Conferencing General Issues and Solutions
- Environmental Background Noise - When not speaking, muting your mic will minimize any disruptions caused by your surrounding environment such as rustling papers or coworker conversations.
- Echo and Feedback - Lowering your speaker volume and
increasing the distance between the speaker and microphone. Better still, use a headset with an attached microphone.
- Wireless Devices – By nature, cordless and mobile phones increase the likelihood of poor audio quality and connectivity when compared to traditional telephone lines. If you must use a wireless device, avoid using the speaker phone function.
- Voice Over IP (VoIP) - If experiencing poor quality on an IP network, it’s advisable to call from a traditional telephone line to ensure the best experience.
- Choppy, Unnatural Interaction - Verify your line is Full Duplex (bidirectional). Undesirable, Half Duplex configurations only allow for an audio signal to travel in one direction at any given time. The odds are good that this will disrupt the natural flow of collaborative discussions.
- Problem Prevention - Scheduling a test conference can be a helpful method of preventing or diagnosing audio problems. To the extent possible, have participants dial in one by one to your scheduled test conference from the actual phone he or she will be using at the time of the actual event. By having users connect one at a time, you will be able to more easily isolate the source of any negative effects.

NOTE: This is a reminder that if you wish to have an all audio phone conference please use the ECS Audio Bridge and NOT the gateway. If you don't know the difference the numbers for the audio bridge are 510-665-5437 versus 510-883-7860 for the gateway.
The gateway is a limited shared resource and is to be used for those wishing to join video conferences who do not have video capabilities or require ISDN connections into same. |
